    Description

Albert Einstein Typed Letter Signed "A. Einstein." One page, 8.5" x 11", in German, Saranac Lake [New York], August 22, 1936. The famed physicist here writes to Leon Ziguelnik regarding a debt, in part and in translation: "It makes no sense that my daughter or I talk to you, especially since I have passed the Marianoff matters off to our representative, attorney James Marshall, 150 Broadway. I thank Mr. Alexandre for his kind offer, but I cannot accept because I have already been committed. With regards to the bank debt, I will not be able to pay the entire sum as promised . . . I hereby agree to pay to the bank immediately 150 dollars, which the two ladies, who have frivolously taken such a guarantee, will simultaneously deposit the remaining 300 dollars to the bank. I request that you communicate this immediately to the two ladies in order to conclusively clean up the matter with me." He includes a postscript stating that four documents are enclosed. At the time of the writing of this letter, Einstein's second wife, Elsa, was gravely ill with heart and kidney problems. She died three months later.

Folds are weakened and separating at the edges. Small .75" tear at the lower edge; .5" tear at the upper edge. Minor chipping at the left edge. Light rust stain from a paperclip is seen along the third fold near the left edge. Small spots of foxing and areas of slight staining.

Einstein's stepdaughter, Margot, had married his Russian assistant, Dr. Dmitri Marianoff, in 1930. Four years later, he left her and the couple's divorce was finalized in 1937. In 1944, Dmitri Marianoff published an unflattering, unauthorized biography of Einstein.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
