Signed by ten moonwalkers and twelve others.

Alan Bean Large Color Limited Edition "In the Beginning..." Lithograph Signed by Twenty-Two Apollo Astronauts. An Artist Proof print, 26" x 30", pencil numbered "AP 138/150", still contained in the original Greenwich Workshop folder. Around the central artwork of the celebrating astronauts on the moon are the mission insignias of all eleven manned Apollo spaceflights. At least one member of each crew has signed beneath their respective emblem: "Wally Schirra" (1923-2007); "Walt Cunningham"; "Frank Borman"; "Jim McDivitt"; "Rusty Schweickart"; "Tom Stafford"; "Buzz Aldrin"; "Michael Collins"; "Charles Conrad Jr" (1930-1999); "Richard Gordon"; "Alan Bean"; "James Lovell"; "Fred Haise"; "Alan Shepard" (1923-1998); "Stuart Roosa" (1933-1994); "Edgar Mitchell"; "Dave Scott"; "Al Worden"; "John Young"; "Charlie Duke"; "Gene Cernan"; and "Harrison H. Schmitt". The signatures of moonwalkers Gene Cernan and John Young were not on the original print but were added through private signings. This represents ten of the twelve moonwalkers and eighteen of the twenty-four moonfliers, As-issued condition.

Included with this lot are Certificates of Authenticity from Novaspace signed by Kim Poor for the Gene Cernan and John Young signatures.

Bean writes about this artwork in the included information sheet: "I knew that creating a painting to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first manned lunar landing and the total Apollo program would be difficult. I wanted the image to show some of the more important things we did on the Moon and, most of all, to express the spirit of the adventure as we astronauts experienced it. But how does one show in a painting the dedication, the intensity, the self sacrifice, the sense of duty, history and patriotism that engulfed us all our quest for the Moon? I didn't know, but I began. Pete Landa, an artist friend, helped with an idea that served as the basis of the painting. Nancy Conrad, the wife of Pete Conrad, my fellow Apollo XII moonwalker thought of the title. I enjoyed creating In the Beginning in this way because that's how Apollo was done. It was not the handiwork of any one person but of 300,000 dedicated human beings working together to make an ages-old impossible dream come true... some twenty-five years, and a lot of wonderful memories, ago. Thanks, America."
