    Abel Head "Shanghai" Pierce Autograph Letter Signed "A. H. Pierce." One page, 6" x 9.5", "B. U. Ranch, Texas," February 9, 1895, on letterhead featuring a bull's head and reading, "Office of A. H. Pierce, Stock-Raiser and Cattle Dealer." Five years before his death, the wealthy Texas cattleman ruminates in this letter over the details of a land deal. In part, "The more I think over Fairbanks Proposition the less favorable I think it [.] it will have to taste & smell strong. Pierce & I will have to have $20,000 by July 1st/95 & $20,000 more by July 7th/97 or it is no go & his one thousand forfeited." Following the Civil War, Abel Pierce (1834-1900), who put together large cattle ranches in Wharton and Matagorda Counties, is credited with bringing Brahman cattle to Texas. This letter is on lined paper and is age-toned.
