19th Century Ledger of Texas Cattle Brands, dated 1853 through 1867. The handwritten ledger appears to have belonged to Asa Langford, an entrepreneur who settled in Hamilton County in the mid-1850s and built several businesses there, including a sawmill, mercantile store, and blacksmith shop. This ledger could have been kept in Langford's blacksmith shop and used to forge the numerous Texas brands identified within these pages.

The first legible date occurs on the second leaf of the ledger, which contains monthly lists of supply purchases made by Langford in 1853. Within the ledger are forty pages of cattle brands, along with the names of the individuals and companies associated with them. Many of the names are in alphabetical order. The final pages of the book contain more cattle brands, lists, figures, and home remedies for various illnesses. One page contains figures for "1866 Langford / Cowes & Calves." The majority of the book's pages are blank; the first eight leaves are severely damaged by insects. The leather cover bears some water damage and minor insect damage.
