    Description

[William Bryan]. Republic of Texas Promissory Note Issued to William Bryan. One partially-printed page, 7" x 4", Washington, January 20, 1843, entitling "Wm Bryan . . . [to] One hundred Dollars, under the provisions of a Joint Resolution . . . The Collectors of Public Dues throughout the Republic of Texas, are authorized to receive this Certificate of the first day of January 1848 in payment thereof." Countersigned by Charles Mason, one of the Gonzales Old Eighteen and a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto, as first auditor of the Republic of Texas. Docketed on the verso. Several cross cut cancellations. Ink bleed-through from the verso.

William Bryan was an important financial backer of the Texas Revolution and Republic. He worked tirelessly to raise money and helped negotiate financial and legal difficulties for Texas and was also instrumental in the establishment of the Texas Navy. He was appointed consul to New Orleans by Mirabeau B. Lamar. Despite the pivotal role he played in the Revolution and Republic eras, Bryan was never repaid adequately for financial and other services he rendered to the Republic.
