[USS Monitor] Two Letters including: Cornelius S. Bushnell Autograph Letter Signed. "C. S. Bushnell." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", on blue-lined paper, New Haven, December 28, 1861. C. S. Bushnell was one of the three financiers of the USS Monitor and this short letter was written during her construction. In it he makes reference to William H. Seward, Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln. [and:] Autograph Letter Signed to John A. Griswold. Two pages, 7.25" x 9.25", on blue-lined paper, New York, September 23, 1861. Written by W. L. Barnes, the letter is addressed to John A. Griswold, president of the Rensselaer Iron Works, where the rivets and bar iron for the USS Monitor was forged, and also a member of the U. S. Congress from 1863 to 1869. In the letter, Barnes makes reference to C. S. Bushnell and "Commodore Smith," who oversaw the construction of the vessel.Barnes also writes: "I believe I explained to you when [illegible] that Bushnell had provided other security in case you did not wish to go on the contract as explained to Capt Ericsson." Captain John Ericsson was the designer of the Monitor.
Also included is a clipped signature of John Augustus Griswold, signed "John A. Griswold" measuring 5.25" x 1.5".
The USS Monitor was commissioned during the American Civil War and was the first ironclad built by the United States Navy. On March 9, 1862, she made history at the Battle of Hampton Roads when she engaged in combat with the CSS Virginia, the first ironclad constructed by the Confederate States, at the Battle of Hampton Roads which ended in a stalemate. She was lost at sea on December 31, 1862.
