"Swedish Nightingale" Jenny Lind's Hair. Here we have approximately twelve strands of operatic star Jenny Lind's hair. The hair is contained in a small plastic pouch attached to a page which features a portrait of Lind, an image of a small leather pouch which the hair was housed in, and a short paragraph on the provenance of the strands. It reads, "This lock of Jenny Lind's hair originally resided in the collection of Mr. Porter Ware who assembled perhaps the greatest collection of Jenny Lind letters and memorabilia." Accompanying this handsome presentation are several pages of facsimiles of Jenny Lind material relating to the lock of hair. Jenny Lind was an international star, singing all over Europe and the eastern United States. Her voice captivated everyone who heard it; Hans Christian Anderson is said to have been in love with her from the instant he heard her sing. She is so well-known even today that the 50 krona banknote in Sweden bears her image and a musical theme.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
