    Description

[Samuel Storer] William S. Dodge Alaska Transition Document Signed as Mayor of Sitka. Two pages including integral blank, approximately 8" x 12.5", Sitka [Alaska], November 26, 1867.

With the blessing of the transition military commander, General Jefferson C. Davis, the townspeople of Sitka drew up a charter, elected a governing council, and named Dodge mayor. This document, signed by Dodge, documents the official election results naming prominent local businessman Samuel Storer a city councilman. Storer later served as Sitka's acting mayor in 1869. Signed once by Dodge and twice by Storer, this handsome piece bears a green seal at lower left. Faint toning.

Accompanied by a personal letter from Storer to Ichabod Goodwin, the former governor of New Hampshire and a successful merchant and mariner, describing his endeavor to operate and grow a mercantile and trading business in Sitka. With very interesting content. Moderately toned.

    More Information:

Once the Russian capitol of Alaska, Sitka was known in the early days as the "Paris of the Pacific," and served as port of call for many trading vessels from around the world. When the sea otter pelt trade died out, Russia sold Alaska to America. One of Sitka's most important figures in the period following the purchase of Alaska was William Dodge, who had been appointed to assist the transfer commission as Brig. Gen. Lovell Rousseau's secretary and to serve as the Treasury Department's Acting Collector of Customs.
