[Pursuit of Booth] James Rowan O'Beirne, Provost Marshal of the District of Columbia and the Initial Pursuer of John Wilkes Booth, Delivery Copy Telegraph Message, written in pencil by an operator and signed in the name of "Edwin M Stanton / Secy of War". One page, 8" x 5.25", no place, no date [April 1865], to Major [James R.] O'Beirne, who, as Provost Marshal of the District of Columbia, had received the first orders to pursue the assassins of President Lincoln. Stanton advises: "You may return but I think some account ought to be obtained of the horses if the search was diligent." This very likely refers to the horses ridden by John Wilkes Booth and Davy Herold, which Herold had led into Zekiah swamp and shot lest they betray the fugitives' hiding place. Two items.
