[John Brown]: Autograph Letter Signed [ALS] by Daughter Re: Burial Arrangements.
5" x 8" letter written on two sides of a single sheet, North Alba, Essex County, New York, November 29, 1859, signed "Ruth B. Thompson", written to Mr. Graves Otis. "... We all thank you sincerely for your generous offer to to intercede for us in getting our dear Father's body. we all feel very anxious to have him buried here, but I am afraid it is too late.. Will you not telegraph to Governor Wise to grant our request?... If our dear father (as well as brothers) are to be sacrificed to the God of Slavery, we shall not believe they have died in vain. We see that a great many attribute fathers course to a spirit of revenge, but it is utterly false. He was actuated by a noble, generous, feeling which has been growing in his breast for more than 20 years..." The letter was written four days before Brown's execution. His body was turned over to the family, as requested, and buried in North Alba. Scattered foxing and insect damage on left side of letter. Handsomely framed with copy image of Brown "taking the oath" and a brass caption plaque. The letter itself is double-glazed and the frame hinged on one side, making it possible to view the verso.
