[James-Younger Gang]. Robert M. Boatright Autograph Letter Signed. One page with integral blank, 5" x 8", St. Louis, May 27, 1875, to Missouri Governor Charles H. Hardin regarding the apprehension of the members of the James-Younger Gang. Boatright, a citizen of St. Louis, begins by giving his credentials and states that he has "...been connected for several years in the Private Detective business in this city..." A string of recent robberies has plagued the state and Boatright believes he knows who the guilty party is and it is not the James-Younger Gang: "...having worked diligently to ascertain the perpetrators of the recent Rail Road Bank and Store Robberies committed in this State, In which the Younger & James Brothers were supposed to be the perpetrators & being now in a position In which I feel confident I can arrest the actual perpetrators of said Deeds..."

His reason for writing is not entirely in the interest of public safety. An ample reward was offered by the state and he was curious if "...the rewards are confined strictly to the Younger & James Brothers, If so cannot the reward be so altered or ammended [sic] as to cover the guilty parties whoever they may be...[and] if any distinction is made in regard to the amount...for the chief or chiefs of these gangs...I am perfectly satisfied their [sic] is two gangs of these Desperados but are working under one head or chief." Folds, else fine.
