    Description

[James Monroe]. John Jacob Astor Autograph Document Signed with a William B. Astor Check Signed. Astor amassed a small fortune through his American Fur Company by selling illegal whiskey to Indians in exchange for fur. In order to ensure the safety and continued profitability of his operation, he placed into his debt politicians in the midst of financial difficulties. One such politician was then Secretary of State James Monroe. In this one page payment order, measuring 7.25" x 3.25", New York, April 21, 1815, Astor instructs the "Cashier of Bank of Columbia" to "Pay to the order of the Honbl James Monroe Three thousand four hundred Dollars." Monroe stayed in debt to Astor throughout his presidency, to Astor's advantage. Astor would often request favors in exchange for not requesting repayment or holding off on charging interest. All that came to an end when Monroe left the presidency and Astor demanded repayment in full.

Also included is a check, one page, 6" x 2.5", November 25, 1837, drawn on the Merchant's Bank of New York to John Jacob Astor's second-eldest son, William B. Astor, in the amount of $5,000. Astor has placed his signature on the verso. Cross cancelled at upper right. Toned along the edges which show some chipping.
