[James Garfield]. Charles Julius Guiteau Autograph Letter Signed "Charles J. Guiteau." One page, 7.75" x 10.5", on Law Offices of Charles J. Guiteau letterhead, Chicago, April 18, 1874, to Dewitt Davis. In this letter Guiteau enlists the help of DeWitt Davis in collecting an outstanding debt.

Charles J. Guiteau would likely have remained an obscure figure had he not sealed his place in history by assassinating President James A. Garfield. Though a lawyer, he never or rarely tried a case, instead devoting his practice almost entirely to bill collecting. This letter is likely a good representation of the bulk of Guiteau's practice as he enlists a colleagues help in collecting an outstanding debt owed by one John Bristol.

The letter displays old, smoothed fold creases, uniform toning to the paper, and raggedness on the left edge, else it is a rare correspondence in very good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
