    Description

[Civil Rights]. Jesse L. Douglas Archive comprised of over fifty reports, letters, speeches, programs, books and booklets, newsletters, and ribbons spanning the years 1963 through 1971. The Reverend Dr. Jesse L. Douglas was a civil rights pioneer in the 1960s who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As one of the leaders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, he, along with then-SCLC president Dr. King, helped to organize the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march and he later served as the fourth president of the Montgomery Improvement Association.

Of note in this fantastic collection of Montgomery Improvement Association and SCLC material is the inclusion of two civil rights posters. The first, a 1968 "Poor People's Campaign" Poster, 14.75" x 21.5", organized by Dr. King and the SCLC, the poster features a print of an original charcoal drawing by artist Herman "Kofi" Bailey (1931-1981) of Dr. King surrounded by eleven people. Folds with very light toning through the title at the upper edge. The campaign continued on after King's assassination in April 1968. The second, a "March on Wall Street / War Against Repression" Poster, circa 1971, 10.5" x 16.25", April 5. The poster features the Rev. Dr. Ralph Abernathy with a statement of WAR's mission: "end hunger / jobs and income / justice / representative govt. / quality education / right to organize / end the war [Vietnam]." WAR was organized around the third anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King. Folds with scattered areas of foxing. Slight wrinkling along the upper edge, which is lightly toned. Area of chipping at the lower edge near the lower right corner.

Also included is a copy of The SCLC Story in Words and Pictures. Edited by Ed Clayton. Atlanta: Southern Christian Leadership Conference, 1964. 4to (8.5" x 11"), 64 pages. Printed wraps feature a moving photograph of Dr. King seen standing in the shadows on the front cover. Lightly toned throughout. One photograph, of the first vice president, has been removed from page eight.
