    Description

The kidnapper of Lindbergh's baby requests to write a letter from prison

[Charles Lindbergh] Bruno Hauptmann Document Signed, with one related envelope. One partly-printed slip of paper, 8.5" x 1.5", n.p., September 7, 1935. The document provides information from inmates requesting to send a letter, card, or telegram.

On the document, Hauptmann signed "R. Hauptmann" next to "Inmate's Name." He has also filled in the date, his inmate number, cell number, and wing address. In the blank next to "To Whom Addressed," Hauptmann wrote, "Lloyd Fisher Flemington." (Lloyd Fisher of Flemington, New Jersey, was a member of Hauptmann's three-man council and was known to visit the prisoner daily.) The accompanying envelope is addressed by an unknown hand to "Mr. R. Bruno Hauptmann / State Prison / Trenton, N.J." It is postmarked in Hamilton, Canada, on March 25, 1936, only days before Hauptmann's execution.

The kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh's twenty-month-old son, Charles Augustus, occurred on the evening of March 1, 1932, and was known at the time as the crime of the century because of the media attention. After a $70,000 ransom was paid, the baby was not returned, but was found eleven days later beaten to death. Hauptmann, thought innocent by some, was executed in New Jersey in the electric chair for the crime in 1936.

    More Information:

Another envelope is also included and may be related. It is addressed in type to "Mr. S. K. Biroschak" of Bridgeport, Connecticut, from Neal A. Multop of New Jersey. It is postmarked July 18, 1936.
