Caroline Scott Harrison Autograph Letter Signed. Two and one-half pages, 4.5" x 7", Indianapolis, August 18 [1886]. Harrison, the wife of President Benjamin Harrison, writes this letter of condolence to Martha Markland on the death of her husband, Colonel Absalom Markland, a special agent in the Post Office Department during the Civil War. In part, "You have suffered such an affliction. I also wish to express to you my sincere sympathy in your sorrow."

Two years after writing this letter, Benjamin Harrison won the presidency and First Lady Caroline Harrison energetically worked to renovate the White House, installing electricity and, in 1889, decorating the first Christmas tree. She died of tuberculosis in the White House in 1892. Absalom Markland served on the staff of General Grant, who tasked him with transforming the slow, inefficient mail delivery into a prompt, efficient service. Markland was successful and was accordingly credited by Grant and Sherman with raising the moral of their Union troops. The letter is clearly written and contains folds. The transmittal envelope is included.
