    More Information:

Carl Schurz (1829-1906) was born in Liblar, near Cologne, Germany, and educated at the gymnasium of Cologne and the University of Bonn.  Active in the German revolutionary movement of 1848, he was compelled to flee from Germany. After serving as a newspaper correspondent in Paris and as a school teacher in London; Schurz immigrated to the United States in 1852 and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Three years later, he moved to Wisconsin, where he studied law and was admitted to the bar.  An unsuccessful candidate for lieutenant governor and governor of Wisconsin; Schurz was appointed Minister to Spain in 1861 by President Lincoln, but resigned in 1862. During the Civil War was appointed brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army in 1862, participating in the Second Battle of Bull Run in August of that year. In 1863, Schurz was promoted major general, assigned to lead XI corps at the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.  His division later participated in the Battle of Chattanooga.  After the war Schurz was engaged in newspaper work in St. Louis, Missouri; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1875.   He served in the Cabinet of President Rutherford Hayes as Secretary of the Interior (1877-1881) and as president of the National Civil Service Reform League (1892-1901).
