Calvin Coolidge Typed Letter Signed. One page on his personal imprinted letterhead, 7.6" x 11". Plymouth, Vermont; June 28,1932. A great content letter politely declining involvement in political matters at the height of the Depression: "We have had a great many extra government bodies, until the country has not a great deal of confidence in them. If you could have a conference of business men to deal with business problems it might do some good. There would be great difficulty in getting men of different parties to agree on any government action during a presidential campaign... Since leaving Washington I have tried to avoid offering advice to the Government because it would be assumed that I did not like what the Government was doing. I have confined my efforts to trying to support the President." Signed in full, "Calvin Coolidge"; with a single holographic emendation. Herbert Hoover faced a tough re-election campaign in 1932, and some Republicans considered drafting Coolidge to run. Coolidge was adamant in rejecting all such suggestions, and was public in his support of Hoover. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.
Condition: Creasing and light soiling throughout, a single staple remains at top left with traces of rust. Pencil note at top reads: "File SB, Keep for signature."
