    Description

Calvin Coolidge Typed Letter Signed as President. One page, 7" x 9", Washington, December 5, 1923, on White House letterhead to Senator Reed Smoot of Utah. "Personal" is typed at the top and underlined. In this lengthy letter Coolidge explains how he determines government appointments. In part: "It is my intention to consult the members of the Senate of our party about these appointments. I wish you would keep this in mind and understand that if there is any other action it would be an oversight. There may be some cases where you will not be able to agree with me, but I want to let you know that I desire the suggestions of all those who are supporting and working with our party, and also to consult others that I might think would be helpful." Usual mail folds, else very good.

    More Information:

Reed Smoot was Utah's longest serving senator with tenure of thirty years. A devout Mormon, Smoot served as an apostle, and was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. When he was first elected, a bitter 4 year battle ensued to determine whether Smoot would be allowed to serve because of his role as a Mormon apostle. Although the committee recommended that Smoot be removed from office, the Senate overruled the decision and Smoot was allowed to serve his term. After repeated re-elections, Smoot would continue to serve as Utah's Senator for 30 years. He would also continue to serve as an apostle of the LDS, and upon his death, he was third in the line of succession to lead the church.
