Brigadier General Francisco Castaneda Archive. Twenty five letters and manuscript circulars circa 1843 through 1846, including several Mexican war-dated items by Gen. Castaneda. Largely routine military correspondences including requests for leave, retained copies of letters, and military orders. Of note: Manuscript DS, 2pp. folio, Santa Rosa, Dec. 23, 1845; circular orders to the various officers in charge. LS, 2pp. 4to., San Fernando, March 29, 1846, informing that the "savages have brought death to a neighbor..." ALS, 3pp. 4to., San Fernando, April 9, 1846, great content letter, hurriedly written relaying news of the activities of the Indians and lack of information gathered by his scout. A letter dated "Riogrande, May 22, 1846" informs the recipient that he has received news from Laredo that "in the unfortunate events in Matamoros seventy officers died, among them General Garcia and Colonels Montero, Mendoza, and Geloti; wounded are Generals Ampudia and Torrejon and taken prisoner Sr. D. Romulo Diaz de la Vega; who knows if this is true..." Overall condition varies greatly and should be examined by prospective bidders for content and condition. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
