Brigadier General Francis A. Shoup: Manuscript Furlough Signed. 7" x 4.5" manuscript on lined paper, 1p., Hd. Qrs. Smiths Div., Enterprise, Miss., July 23, 1863, signed "F. A. Shoup Brig. Genl. Comd'g Div." This "Special Order" was issued to Chief of Artillery James A. Wiggs, granting him "... a leave of absence for thirty days at the expiration of which he will report at Demopolis Ala." Normal folds with minor loss at top, not affecting text. Shoup served at Shiloh, Vicksburg (captured and exchanged) and the Atlanta Campaign. He was Chief of Staff for John Bell Hood. James Wiggs had a distinguished four-year career in the Confederate army being captured, like General Shoup, when the garrison at Vicksburg surrendered. He served as Chief of Artillery, Ordnance and Staff for a variety of generals.
