Braxton Bragg Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10.5", on Head Quarters Armies Confederate States letterhead, Richmond, August 29, 1864. Writing to Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early, Bragg is transmitting a report regarding the former command of Gen. Robert Ransom, who "was requested to suggest such changes as would improve the discipline & increase the Efficiency thereof." Bragg writes, in part:

"I enclose you a Copy of his Report, before taking any action, & request your suggestions. As part of the Command was for some time under Maj. Gen. Breckenridge, he may be even better acquainted . . . with the personnel. I therefore desire you to obtain an Expression of his opinion also . . . It is feared that too radical a change may produce dissatisfaction in those Commands raised mostly in the Country now held by the Enemy, and cause many desertions. At the same time it is felt that some stringent measures are necessary to secure discipline, & prevent disaster."

Some areas of wrinkling are present in the upper left corner. Folds are weakened and separating, but are repaired on the recto with tape. Minor damage to the left edge has resulted in some paper loss. With a Bragg carte de visite featuring a vignetted portrait of the general from early in the war.
