DescriptionBond to Procure Traders License in Colonial Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. One sheet, 14.5" x 17.75", February 17, 1759. This bond is signed and sealed by numerous merchants and traders, all "Creditors of Robert Callender and Michael Teaffe of Cumberland County of the Province of Pennsylvania - Indian Traders and Copartners." In part, this license - addressed in large, bold text at the top of the page "To all People" - granted that Callender and Teaffe, "in virtue of the late Treaty of Peace concluded with the Indians," would be compensated for any losses or damages sustained "In the Woods by their Trader dealings with the Indians." Robert Callender, who later served as a colonel in the American Revolution, was one of the most active Indian traders of his day. Docketing and signatures on the verso.
