Benjamin Rush Twice Signed Manuscript Legal Decision. Two pages of a bifolium, with docket on the verso, 8.5" x 13". In part: "We the Subscribers being indifferently chosen by William Maclay and Lawrence Keene Esquires to settle and determine all matters in variance between said parties, particularly a dispute touching an agreement heretofore made... Under this idea we conceive that the Lands to be granted by Doctor Benjamin Rush and Company W. Vaughan and Francis Johnston Esqr. to the said Wm. Maclay for discovering locating and Surveying lands to the said Rush & company and said Vaughan and Johnston should be equally divided between said Maclay and Keene, but in consideration of said Maclay having hitherto done the whole Business of Surveying locating &c said lands, we are of the opinion that the Surveying fees should be the property of him the said Maclay and that all expences absolutely necessary which hath or shall hereafter attend the executing and perfecting said Business should be mutually and equally borne by the said Maclay and Keene and the Residue or profits if any to be equally divided... [signed] Benjn Rush [and] Frans Johnston." The initial decision is dated March 24, 1786.A memorandum dated March 28, 1786 immediately follows providing additional details to the arrangement. Rush and Johnston sign a second time. Docketed on the verso in an unknown hand: "A Paper respecting my concern with Mr. Wm McClay in District No. 16. (therefore of consequence.) A full typed transcription and two engravings of Rush are included.
Condition: Gently toned, with stain at bottom affecting all sides. Flattened folds, with minor separation occurring in margins, and a few bits of paper loss at intersections. A few minor repairs done at an earlier time. Tiny chips along bottom edge.
