Benjamin Lincoln Partly-printed Document Signed. One page, 13" x 8.5"; Watertown; September 6, 1775. Signed by fifteen members of the Whig-dominated Massachusetts Council, including Lincoln together with Moses Gill, Samuel Holten, Joseph Gerrish, and Perez Morton as Deputy Secretary.

An appointment of Josiah Batchelder Jr. as Coroner for Essex County. On the verso Joseph Gerrish has added an endorsement: "Colony of Massachusetts Bay Watertown Sept. 29, 1775 Josiah Batchelder Jurn. within named appeared and took the oath required by an Act of said Colony that he would honestly, faithfully and impartially execute all the Duties of his office agreeable to the within Commission, according to the best of his skill and Abilities." Samuel HOLTON also signs below Gerrish's signature. Weak folds expertly repaired on verso with archival tissue, some uneven moderate toning and soiling, else very good.

The Massachusetts Council was originally an advisory body to the royal governor of the colony designed to act as a check on executive power. In the years leading to the American Revolution, the council was viewed by the Whigs as puppets of the governor and they established their own council in mid 1775, an elected body that governed as the de facto executive for the state until the adoption of a new constitution in 1780.
