Benjamin Harrison V Autograph Letter Signed "Benj. Harrison." One page with integral address leaf, 7.25" x 9.75", Virginia, November 3, 1768. Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, has addressed this letter to fellow patriot, William Palfrey in Boston, regarding payment to a woman in need, in part: "I wrote you some time ago . . . in which I desired you to pay Leadbetters wife seven Pounds and not to send me the Candles, as that Letter did not get to Hand in time, I shall now be obliged to you to pay that Sum to the Woman, who must be in want of it." Areas of uneven toning. Separation of the fold connecting the address leaf. The text is fading in places, but is still wholly legible.

Benjamin Harrison V (1726-1791) was a delegate to both the first and second Continental Congresses. In the last years of the war, he served as Virginia's fifth governor. Harrison was the progenitor of two future U.S. presidents, his son, William Henry Harrison, and great-grandson, Benjamin Harrison.

Lt. Col. William Palfrey (1741-1780) worked as a clerk for John Hancock's in Boston. When war broke out, he served as aide-de-camp to General George Washington in March and April 1776, serving after as the postmaster general for the Continental Army. In 1780, Palfrey set sail for France to take up position as consul-general, but the ship was lost at sea.
