A telegram to his future second wife

Benjamin Harrison Draft Autograph Telegram Signed. One page,7.75" x 5". Washington; August 4, 1892. Addressed to Mary Scott Lord Dimmick, who would become his second wife: "Mary S. Dimmick / Loon Lake N.Y. / It now seems certain that Congress will adjourn Saturday - will start immediately on adjournment and come through special." Signed, "Benj Harrison."

Harrison's then wife, Caroline, had fallen ill with tuberculosis that summer, and the President had sent her to Loon Lake in hopes of restoring her health. She would die less than 3 months after the date of this telegram. Dimmick, herself a widow, was Caroline's niece and served as her secretary. Harrison later married Dimmick in 1896, much to the chagrin of his two adult children. The family rift never healed; and upon Harrison's death, most of his estate went to his second wife and child. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Age toning, and flattened folds. With a few stray notes in pencil, likely made by a previous owner. Uneven edge at left, with large chip at lower left. A few stray creases.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
