Benjamin Harrison Civil War Military Appointment Signed "Benj. Harrison Col." with one related document. One partially-printed page, 14.75" x 9.5", Gallatin [Tennessee], March 28, 1863. The future twenty-third U.S. president was serving as a colonel in the Union Army in command of the 70th Indiana Volunteer Regiment when he appointed "Samuel Laing [official records list his surname as Lang]. . . Orderly Sergt in Company E, of the 70th Regiment of Indiana Vols." The regiment was serving garrison duty in Gallatin at the time of this appointment. Smoothed folds show very minor separation at the upper edge; mounting remnants on the verso. Harrison, the grandson of President William Henry Harrison, was the last president to have served as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Also included is Lang's discharge from the army, one partially-printed, 7.75" x 10.75" page, issued "Near Washington" on June 8, 1865. Samuel Lang enlisted in the Union Army on July 16, 1862, as a sergeant in Co. "E," 70th Indiana Infantry, but, for reasons unknown, was reduced to ranks during the course of the war and was discharged as a private.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
