Benjamin Harrison Autograph Letter Signed "Benj. Harrison / Col Comdg." One and one-quarter ruled pages of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.75", Chattanooga, Tennessee, January 13, 1865. In this scarce Civil War-dated letter from the future twenty-third president, Colonel Harrison writes to William H. Schlater, the adjutant general for Illinois, regarding some colonels under his command who were trying to derail his upcoming promotion. Docketing on the fourth page. Harrison Civil War-dated letters are scarce. This one bears bold ink. The signature shows minor smearing of Harrison's signature. Slight soiling. The letter reads in part:

"I have just got back to this place after a campaign of six weeks, extending from here to Nashville & from there nearly to Tuscumbia Ala. after [Confederate General John Bell] Hood. It was the hardest in exposure & discomfit I have ever made. [General James B.] Steedman always shoves things. He can't get relieved to go to Sherman now & are highly disgusted. I mean to break away from here somehow or other. I am told some Illinois colonels in my Brig are trying to injure my chances of promotion at Washington by reason of my absence. If you can do anything to keep me right before the authorities I would be obliged to you."

In 1862, Harrison began his service to the Union by recruiting throughout northern Illinois. He received promotions throughout the war. One month before writing this letter, Harrison and his regiment participated in the Battle of Nashville. Despite the concerns communicated in this letter, President Lincoln promoted Harrison to brigadier general only days after writing this letter.
