    A Collection of Signatures of Union Generals Elegantly Bound for the Mississippi Valley Sanitary Fair

    Autograph Collection of the Mississippi Valley Sanitary Fair 46 Signatures of Union Generals mounted in leather bound autograph album, most facing an engraving of the signer, with tissue guard. The album measures 7.75" x 10", with leather covered boards and raised spine with gilt title. A letter at the back of the album written on Mississippi Valley Sanitary Fair letterhead indicates that this is item No. 320 and was donated by the "Metropolitan and Baltimore [Sanitary] Fairs." According to the letter, the album contains "Autograph Signatures of the following named Generals Grant, McClellan, Burnside, McDowell, Hooker, Meade, Fremont, Dix, Butler [crossed out], Hunter, Anderson, Gillmore, Sickles, Heintzelman, Hancock, Stoneman, Averell, Pleasanton, Keyes, Howard, Stahel, Wright, Franklin, Foster, Peck, Hitchcock, Meigs, Augur, Dana, Milroy, Schenck, Wallace, Sherman, Thomas, McCook, Rousseau, McPherson, Reynolds, Negley, McClernand, Washburn, Hamilton, Herron, Logan, Blair, Banks, & Butler. 46 Signatures, neatly mounted, on tinted paper, 8pp 4to." All signatures are with rank on small sheets of paper that are mounted onto individual pages. A unique presentation amassed for the purpose of raising funds for the Union cause.

    A second letter also on Mississippi Valley Sanitary letterhead is also bound at back with content regarding items purchased by a Mr. Woodward on behalf of the recipient.

    Condition: Leather bound boards have heavy wear and color is greatly faded. Both top and bottom boards are detached. Interior pages are gently and evenly toned, but very clean. This is the first such presentation of autographs we have handled.
