Autograph Album Compiled by John W. Mix and Spanning the Years of the Civil War Up Through the Early 1900s. More than 140 autographs of notables, including presidents, generals, politicians, and celebrities of the day in various formats; in an autograph album measuring 5" x 8". Some signatures are directly on the album page, but most are affixed. The very first signature in the album is Abraham Lincoln, who signs "A. Lincoln" in the center of the page. The very next page contains the signature of Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln's Vice President. Other notable signatures include: Ulysses S. Grant, signing with rank directly on the page; Robert E. Lee, signature clip; William T. Sherman, signature clip with rank; George Meade, signature and sentiment with rank on a small slip; David G. Farragut, signature and sentiment with rank on a small slip; Philip Sheridan, clip signature with rank; Robert Anderson, signature clip; Phineas T. Barnum, signature clip; Harriet Beecher Stowe, signature and sentiment on a small sheet; Alexander Stephens, letter closing and signature; Jefferson Davis, signature on a card; Kalakaua, King of Hawaii, signature on a card; Pierre G.T. Beauregard, signature on a card; Rutherford B. Hayes, signed Executive Mansion card; Theodore Roosevelt, signed White House card; William H. Taft signature on a card; Benjamin Harrison signature on a card; Grover Cleveland, signature on a card; James Longstreet, signature and sentiment on a small slip; Thomas Edison, signature in pencil on a small card; Samuel F.B. Morse signature and sentiment on a small sheet; Alexander Graham Bell signed quote on a card; Daniel Webster, signature clip; Schuyler Colfax, signature clip; David Wilmot signature; Horace Greeley signature; Henry Clay, signature clip; Joseph Hooker, signature with rank on a small card; John Wanamaker, signature on a card; Winfield Scott Hancock signature with rank on a slip; Benjamin Butler, signature clip; and dozens more.Other items of note:
William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody Autograph Note Signed on a small lined sheet, 6" x 2.5". In purple wax crayon: "Sitting Bulls autograph will cost you just one dollar he don't propose to be annoyed by autograph hunters. W.F. Cody."
Edward Everett Autograph Quote Signed, "Washington was the greatest of good men & the best of great men." Adding, "Boston 16 Nov 1864." On a slip of lined paper, 4.25" x 2.5".
Lucretia Garfield Autograph Letter Signed on mourning stationery. One page, 4.25" x 6.25"; Cleveland, January 16, 1882. A brief letter advising that she is unable to "grant your request but the demand for General Garfield's autographs renders it quite impossible." Affixed along the left margin.
Alfred Terry War-Dated Autograph Document Signed. Handwritten field orders on a sheet, 6.25" x 2.75", regarding the mails. Affixed to a sheet with a typed note from Dix attesting that the above note was sent to him by a Lieutenant Cross.
Joseph E. Johnston Autograph Letter Signed. One page trimmed to 5" x 6", a post-war letter dated April 3, 1867: "My dear General, Capt. Catesby Jones of the (so called) Confederate Navy, has just read me a letter from Col. Norris asking the address of Gen. E.G. Lee..."
The album was compiled by John W. Mix, who was Pennsylvania journalist active during the Civil War. We have previously sold an article on the Battle of Gettysburg written by Mix published in the Bradford Argus on July 30, 1863.
Condition: Heavy wear to boards; with the spine and top board all but disbound. Adhesive staining throughout, with some pages loose.
