Zane Grey Autograph Manuscript Unsigned. 10 pages, 3.75" x 6.75", "Beaver Den Camp"; October 3, 1927. A descriptive account of a road trip from California through Arizona, which reads in part:

"We motored from Altadena, Cal. To Flagstaff in less than two days...All day the first day it rained; and the next day, when we struck the forests with the soft holes and black pits in the [illegible] thickets, we had to unload the trucks, and drag them, and one another out of the muck...the first night out found us stranded in a dark gloomy forest, with ground and brush and fire-wood thoroughly wet...Two miles west of Leonard Canyon we ran into a mud-hole impassable for the trucks...I got a sight of Haught - the old Tonto Basin bear hunter! I had forgotten how often I had seen him that way...his hard long frame, his dark rough face and shaggy beard...At the head of Beaver we saw a bear each bobbing along a slope...This morning was crisp and fragrant and spicy. The boys left to take the cars back to Long Valley and then down to Paysa. Lee brought up the horses. Night as always was in the lead. This great horse - the original Night of Riders of the Purple Sage - must have been all of 18 years old. Yet he appeared black and glossy and spirited as ever..." The manuscript is housed in a small, leather loose-leaf binder, measuring 4.5" x 7.25".

Condition: Light edge toning to the pages. Slight tearing at the three-ring binder holes. Wear and rubbing to the binder edges and spine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
