Whitelaw Reid Autograph Letter Signed, 4 pages, 5.25" x 8" "Cin. Gazette Rooms, Washington, D.C.", August 5, 1865, to a Mr. Conway asking for help in having a book published in London at the same time it is being published in the U.S. on the subject of "a picture of the South emerging from the contest into which it plunged so boastfully". Of course he is referring to the Civil War; the book's content "will include a mass of information about negro schools, negro work on the cotton plantations of the Miss. Valley, - Jeff Davis among the rest..." Condition is fair, with uneven toning and some paper loss affects the text. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.
