    W. H. Auden Autograph Letter Signed and Typed Letters Signed.

    Autograph Letter Signed "W. H. Auden." One page, 8.5" x 11", 7 Cornelia Street, New York, New York; May 21, 1947. Letter to a Mr. Roberts in which Auden writes that he cannot help locate copies of "a little privately of my poems in 1928. As to the Faber 1930 volume, I have no idea how many copies there were in the first issue."

    Typed Letter Signed "W.H. Auden." Two pages, 8.5" x 10.75", Birmingham, England; September 9, 1938. A letter to the American historian, philosopher, and literary critic Lewis Mumford (1885-1990), Auden writes, in part, "I nearly wrote you a fan letter once before, when I read Civilization and Technics, and now, having just finished The Culture of Cities, I feel I must say that, to me, they are two of the most interesting books of our time. The only criticism I can make is that in places, and I am sure that this was not your intention, you give the impression if being a tiny bit puritanical about such things as domestic decoration, and the wish to express one's personality."

    Typed Letter Signed "W.H. Auden." Post card, 4.25" x 5.75", Napoli, Italy; September 24, 1953. Post card to Eric Bentley, New York City, in which Auden states that he has no copies of "all the songs I translated from u Mutter Courage /u ."

    Typed Letter Signed "W. H. Auden." One page, with canceled postal cover, 5.75" x 8.25", Austria; June 16, 1969. Letter to Kathryn B, Medina, Doubleday & Company, New York City, in which Auden writes, in short, "I'm afraid I have bad news for you. After various attempts, I have come to the conclusion that I simply cannot translate Yevtushenko's poems, that is to say, I can find no way of combining in English his 'informal' manner with his formal versification."

    W, H. Auden (1907-1973) was a British-American poet.

    Condition: Letters have the usual folds; otherwise good.
