Upton Sinclair Autograph Letters (5) Signed with Typed Signed Letter. Letters span from December 15, 1955 to September 12, 1956, and are addressed to Norman Cousins and staff at the Saturday Review. All letters are signed either "Sinclair" or "U Sinclair". The five handwritten letters, all measuring 8.5" x 5.5", on Sinclair's personal stationary, concerning materials he had sent the publication to use for various articles. Sinclair's materials had not been returned to him, and his letters became increasingly urgent. He was finally forced to send the included typed letter, one page, 8.5" x 11", dated September 12, 1956, stating, "I will not trust myself to say what I think of this treatment. I will simply state that you have two valuable properties of mine, one of them sent at your request, and I intend to get them back."

Also included in this group are two retained carbons of letters Cousin sent to Sinclair during this time. Cousins was prompt in his response to Sinclair's last letter and tried to smooth any ruffled feathers. In a retained carbon of his letter, (one page, 8.5" x 11", September 17, 1956) he explains to Sinclair the mishap and says, "I regret more than I can say the seeming discourtesy. It would make me unhappy if it should have the effect of interfering with our friendship".

Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) was a Pulitzer Prize winning American author who wrote almost 100 books, most notably The Jungle (1906), which exposed conditions in the meat packing industry. Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.

Condition: All letters are lightly toned with usual mail folds, else good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
