Three Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Autograph Letters Signed, "Henry W. Longfellow", eight pages total, 4.25" x 7", Cambridge, Massachusetts, October 15, 1869, February 8 and February 15, 1870, with unstamped cover addressed to Edmond Price, Allston, Massachusetts. Longfellow was undoubtedly one of the English language's most eloquent poets and produced a substantial body of work composed of such masterpieces as Evangeline, Song of Hiawatha, and The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. A lesser-known collection of his sonnets, "Three Friends", includes the line, "Hangs o'er the Brighton Meadow like a fate". The Brighton Meadow immortalized here is the subject of the letters offered in this lot. All three letters reference the place by name and it seems that Longfellow was buying the property from the recipient of the correspondence. The February 8, 1870 letter, for instance, reads in small part: "...On Saturday I sent by Mr. W.A. Saunders (who said he should see you) $3500 to take up your mortgage on the Brighton Meadows. If you are in town today, and will call upon him, you will find the money ready for you...". An exceptional and cohesive grouping with a direct literary reference and three splendid signatures. Small edge splits along folds and browning on edges. Very good condition.
