Thornton Wilder. Autograph Letter Signed, "Thornton Wilder." One page, approximately 6 x 8 inches, January 5, 1938, New Haven, Connecticut, personal stationery, black ink. A fascinating letter responding to criticism of his view of the afterlife in his fiction, written by Wilder in the year he both published and won the Pulitzer Prize for his play Our Town. In the text of the letter, Wilder references his two most famous works - the aforementioned Our Town and The Bridge of San Luis Rey (for which he won his first Pulitzer Prize). Two horizontal mailing folds, some age discoloration along the edges, and one tiny tear at the top edge, else in fine condition.

    More Information:

The text of the letter reads: "Jan. 5 1938 / Dear Miss Yates: / Yes, it is true that my / idea of the survival after / death has become even / more abstract than before, / but it seems to be true / that you in your extreme / clinging to a survival / of personality and individ- / ualization after death / refused to hear what I / was saying in both the / earlier and later works. / In the Bridge [The Bridge of San Luis Rey]: even memory is not necessary for love. / What did you suppose that that / meant? = Love as energy / is sufficient, not as object. / And that "love returns to the / love that made" it. So / likewise the dead in "Our / Town" are waiting for "something / they feel is coming, something / important and great. Aren't / they waiting for the eternal / part in them to come out / clear?" i.e. the love as energy / - not as human impulse to a / human object any longer - from / God and finally returned to / him. / Abstract, yes. But God is / a spirit and his temporary / appearance among humans is / finally discarded along with all / human appearance and is with / drawn again into pure spirit. At least / that is the temporary fallible opinion of / Sincerely Yours, / Thornton Wilder."
