Shalom Aleichem Autograph Letter Signed. One page with integral blank, 5.5" x 8.5", in Yiddish, on Hotel Regina letterhead, Locarno [Switzerland], September 27, 1909. Aleichem, born Shalom Rabinowitz (1859-1916), was a Ukrainian-born author best remembered as the author of the musical, "Fiddler on the Roof." As persecution against Jews swept through the Russian Empire (pogroms), Aleichem made his way into Western Europe. Here he writes to Ben Amil, in part:

"Again we are neighbors. I am here on my way to Italy, but it is still a little too early there, so I must stay here about a month. . . . There isn't here, in Latin 'Zabladrit.' Me, my mother, and Maya. The family is dispersed. They're all in the land of Pniye. Even little Tamara, her also. And my wife. In my old age she made me lonely. She is right: What use is a sick Shalom Aleichem? . . . From the 'grandfather' I received a dear and wonderful letter today. He writes that the Jews, from much love, almost choked . . . God is punishing me. I wish to be with Jews but am dwelling among non-Jews . . . Maybe you would be willing to intercede between a husband and wife and make peace between them then . . . write a short letter to my wife that such a thing is not done, such is not right, such is not legal, such is not according to human behavior, such is not instinct."

Very slight smudging of the ink through the horizontal fold. Scattered spots of foxing. Aleichem, a dedicated Zionist, settled in New York City with an additional house for his family in Geneva, but due to expenses, he joined them in Switzerland. In 1914 the family moved to New York. Alechem, who had tuberculosis, died two years later.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
