Samuel Clemens "Mark Twain" Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5.5" x 8.75", Hartford, Connecticut, October 20, 1884. A brief letter: "Dear Young Ladies - I haven't time to write a long one, I'm so busy now. Truly Yours, S.L. Clemens." In 1884, Clemens was an extremely busy man. Having just finished writing the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and overseeing its publication in England, Clemens was also in the midst of opening his own publishing company, Charles Webster & Co., in America. Indeed, on the very day this letter was written, Clemens presided as Chairman over a local meeting of the Mugwumps (dissident Republicans), to discuss the imminent presidential elections (Clemens voted for Grover Cleveland). Letter is faintly toned and the upper portion has been affixed to a 6" x 4" piece of heavy paper.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
