Samuel Clemens ("Mark Twain") Albumen Signed "Mark Twain" and "S. L. Clemens", with quotation and sentiment dated September 28, 1900. This rare twice-signed photograph, 3" x 5.75", is mounted to an overall size of 5" x 8.25". Above the image, Clemens has written, "Truth is the most valuable thing we have. Let us economise it. Truly yours, Mark Twain" - a quotation from a chapter epigraph from Pudd'nhead Wilson's New Calendar in Twain's Following the Equator (1897). Twain's signature begins on the photo and ends on the backing. Below the photo, Clemens has written, "To Mr. Pinkhorn, with the compliments of S. L. Clemens." The photographers stamp is in three places (each a version of "H. Walter Barnett/ Park Side Hyde Park Corner/ London S.W."): in the lower right corner of the photo, below the photo, and on the verso. With mounting remnants on the verso.

At the end of his worldwide lecture tour, Samuel Clemens was a guest of the Dollis Hill house during the summer of 1900. While staying at this quiet English farmhouse surrounded by meadows and sheep and only a short distance from downtown London, the author and lecturer worked (and signed this photograph) before sailing for American on October 6, 1900.
