Robert Lowell Typed Letter Signed "Robert Lowell". One page, 8.5" x 11", Cambridge, Massachusetts, circa April 1977. Lowell writes to Norman Cousins accepting an invitation to an American-Soviet Writers' Conference. Lowell has made a few annotations and signed in blue ink.

Accompanied by a copy of the invitation, two pages, 8.5" x 11", April 20, 1977. Robert Lowell was an American poet, whose work was often influenced and set in Boston, where he grew up. Lowell died only five months later, having suffered a heart attack. He was only 60 years old.

Norman Cousins founded the American-Soviet Writer's Conference with the goal "to provide an opportunity for a private, frank, and open exchange of views on literary and philosophical issues of mutual interest. Related to this is the opportunity to encourage a wider understanding, within the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., of the best literature from both countries." The first meeting of its kind, the inaugural conference was held in Moscow. The following year it was held in New York, and the next at the Black Sea resort of Batumi. The conference was unique in that everything said by those who attended was kept off the record.

Condition: Letter has some light soiling at center fold, with creasing from additional folds at corners.
