Robert Louis Stevenson Cabinet Photo Signed on verso to American artist Will H. Low. Sepia toned photograph, 5.5" x 8", circa 1885. Inscribed on the verso: "Robert Louis Stevenson / to / Will H. Low / from phot[o] by Sir P. Shelley Both [Bournemouth]." Percy Shelley was the son of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and novelist Mary Shelley. He was an avid amateur photographer and had befriended Stevenson when living in Bournemouth. Included is the backboard that the photo was originally framed with that has a note stating that the photo was taken by Sir Percy Shelly in 1885, and a sticker with the name Mrs. W.H. Low and a Bronxville address. A scarce image with an important association.

Condition: The albumen has multiple creases to the surface and the mount has chipping along the bottom, just touching the corner of the albumen at lower left. The image remains handsome despite a few stray stains in the emulsion. Mounting remnant along top of verso of mount is visible, but can be trimmed or matted out.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
