Robert Frost Typed Poem Signed. One page, 8.5" x 11", circa 1936. Poem titled "To a Thinker", submitted to the Saturday Review of Literature, where it first appeared in the January 11, 1936 issue. This typescript was the actual copy submitted by Frost, and contains the editor's layout instructions. Frost has signed immediately below the last line of the poem. Stamped, "Sat. Review of Lit. / 8pt. on 10 Textype" at top left. In part:

The last step taken found your heft
    Decidedly upon the left.
Once more would throw you on the right.
    Another still-you see your plight...

The poem is written in rhymed couplets. According to literary critic Mordecai Marcus, the poem is most likely a criticism of Franklin D. Roosevelt's social programs, although Frost claimed that he wrote the poem before Roosevelt took office.

The Saturday Review of Literature was founded in 1924 by Henry Seidel Canby. Norman Cousins took over as editor in 1940. Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.

Condition: Large amounts of paper loss at top right corner and edge, bottom left corner, and bottom edge does not affect any text. Toning and soiling throughout, horizontal folds. Signature has been struck through in pencil but remains bold.
