Raymond Chandler Signed Copy of Ben Hecht's A Guide for the Bedevilled. Placed on the front free endpaper, the American novelist and screenwriter has written, "Raymond Chandler / Hollywood March 30 1944 / From Dr. Sam Hirshfeld." Hirshfeld was a movie colony doctor and friend of Hecht. Light to moderate toning along the gutter touches the inscription, but with no effect.

A Guide for the Bedevilled, a critique of anti-Semitism, was written in 1943 by prolific screenwriter and Zionist Ben Hecht (1894-1964). Hecht admittedly had little interest in Judaism until shortly before the Second World War, when he joined the Zionist movement and decided to publicize the atrocities befalling the Jewish people in Europe. This edition was published in New York in 1944 by Charles Scribner's Sons. 8vo, 276 pages. Green cloth over boards with titles in gilt on the front board. Upper corner of page 5-6 is damaged. Light shelfwear.

Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) is best known for his detective fiction novels featuring the private detective, Philip Marlowe. Of his eight novels, seven have been adapted for film.
