Oliver Wendell Holmes Autograph Letter Signed "OW Holmes." One page of a bifolium, 4.5" x 7", Boston; October 31, [no year]. Addressed to a Mr. Fields, possibly poet James Thomas Fields. Holmes lived at his 164 Charles Street residence from 1858 to 1870. The letter reads in full: "Got back this morning -much dilapidated, not improving. Have had a hard time of it with my old enemy, but did Montreal and Quebec pretty thoroughly. I hope to be well enough to be with you on the 6th, which promises to be so pleasant an occasion."

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809 - 1894) was a physician, poet, and author, best remembered for exposing the cause of puerperal fever and for seeking to expose medical quacks and "pretended science".
