    Description

    Noah Webster Autograph Letter Signed "N Webster". One page 7.5" x 9.75", New Haven, Connecticut, March 14, 1836, to his publishers, N & J White. It reads, in full:

    "I am aware of the difficulty you mention, in the correction specified, in the Dictionary. But the inconvenience will not be great. & the evil cannot be remedied, till a new set of plates shall be cast. The alterations specified are directed to be made in all the copies of the Elementary. & in Ohio, they are already made.

    "I wish to correct any error or discrepancy as soon as it can be done, & to conform to general usage & the wish of my friends, as far as practicable. In revising the London Edition of the 4to, some alterations will be made in the accentuation of words. & when this shall be done, the same alterations will be required in the octavo.

    "I have your notes still in possession. & I apprised you last week that I ?? them till Redfield & Lindsay present me their bill- I hope a delay of payment will be of no inconvenience to you- The second note is not due till April 20. Yours with respect."

    American lexicographer Noah Webster Jr. (1758-1843) is best known for his landmark Webster's Dictionary, but he is also synonymous with education and scholarship.

    Condition: Elegantly matted and framed to an overall 25.75" x 17.25" with a reproduction of the title page of his original Dictionary of the English Language. Lightly toned, flattened mailing folds, tiny notch torn at upper left corner.
