Nathaniel Hawthorne Autograph Letter Signed "Nath Hawthorne." One page of a bifolium, 4.75" x 7.25", Concord, Massachusetts; March 15, [18]63. A letter, written one year before his death, addressed to Hawthorne's son's teacher, regarding his son's education. It reads in full:

"I thank you for the letter which you have so kindly written, defining Julian's progress in his studies, and am grateful that you find it possible to say so much good of him - a great part of which, I am sure, must be owing to your own beneficial influence over your pupil."

Hawthorne (1804-1864) is best known for his novel The Scarlet Letter. His son Julian, the second of three children, was 17 years old at the time and attending Harvard College. It is possible that Hawthorne was writing to James Russell Lowell, who was giving Julian private tutoring lessons in German. Julian himself would go on to become a writer and journalist.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, and the two lower corners appear to have been clipped. Areas of dark soiling or dampstaining. Bold signature by Hawthorne.
