Nathaniel Hawthorne Autograph Letter Signed inlaid into a Grangerized copy of F.B. Sanborn's book titled Hawthorn and his Friends. Cedar Rapids: The Torch Press. 1908. The Hawthorne letter is dated October 22, 1851 and measures 5" x 8". "I suppose Ticknor & Co will publish a new book of mine, for children in the course of a day or two..." The author sends instructions that seven presentation copies be disbursed, including a copy to the addressee's own daughter. The letter appears to be cut and trimmed for the purpose of fitting the size of the volume it is bound into.

This extra illustrated book includes dozens of engravings as well as letters by Julia Ward Howe, George W. Curtis, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, George S. Hillard, and Theodore Parker. Evidence of repair to the spine and joints, and heavy wear to the binding.
