Maurice Sendak Signed Poster Entitled "Freedom to Read." Signed by Sendak at the lower right of the illustration. Measures 21.5 x 30 inches. Fine.

    More Information:

This wonderful poster was issued by the American Booksellers Association to develop awareness about book censorship, and to aid the ABA's Legal Defense Fund. The central image depicts Mickey from In the Night Kitchen, which was partially banned because of its frontal nudity, along with many other famously censored books represented in text within the illustration. Two versions of the poster were issued: a limited edition of 275 copies signed only by Sendak and a deluxe version limited to 90 copies (of which this present example is #79) signed by Sendak and approximately 40 additional writers, artists, newspersons, actors, and more, all victims of censorship during their careers. Some of the other signatures include: Jeffrey Archer, Harlan Ellison, Harrison Ford, Whoopi Goldberg, Jeff Blum, Beth Henley, Barry Moser, Dan Rather, Neil Simon, Gloria Steinem, Garry Trudeau, Chris Van Allsburg, David Weisner, Robin Williams, Mary Higgins Clark, and John Sayles. A truly rare display item for all enemies of censorship. Fine condition.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
