    Description

Jules Verne Autograph Letter Signed "Jules Verne." One page, 5.25" x 8", Amiens, France; January 29, 1898. Addressed to "Monsieur le Ministre" and written in French. Verne writes in the hopes that his son-in-law, Albert de Francy, might get assigned to a post that would be better suited for his daughter's fragile health. In part:

"... Mr. Albert de Francy, Deputy 2nd class steward currently in residence in Blois...is called there [Besançon] with the same rank but to fulfill the 1st class stewardship...Minister, the climate of Besançon, very harsh in winter, would not be suitable for Madame de Francy, whose health is most delicate...However, in a few weeks, the place of second-steward class will be vacant in Tours where General Riff would welcome Mr. de Francy. In the name of Madame Verne and mine, I come to you ask, Minister, if you could not or leave our son-in-law in Blois or send him to Tours to wait for his promotion to the next grade? I apologize for insisting on this, but please urge to take into consideration the health of our daughter..." On January 10, 1857, Verne married Honorine de Viane Morel, a young widow with two daughters, Suzanne and Valentine.

Born in Nantes, France, Verne ran away to sea at the age of 11. After he was sent home in disgrace, he vowed to continue his travels in his imagination. With such works as Around the World in Eighty Days (1873), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1874), Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea (1873), and Mysterious Island (1875), Verne seemingly forecast, with remarkable accuracy, many scientific achievements of the 20th century.
